“Blood and Sugar” – Boys Like Girls
Some songs don’t demand your attention.
They earn it.
That’s exactly what “Blood and Sugar” by Boys Like Girls has been doing around Masters Radio this month.
It isn’t chasing trends or trying to fit neatly into whatever happens to be dominating playlists this week. Instead, it delivers exactly what great rock songs have always delivered: memorable hooks, soaring melodies, energetic guitars, and a chorus that somehow gets bigger every time you hear it.
What really stands out is how natural it feels.
There’s no sense that the band is trying to recreate the past or imitate what’s currently popular. “Blood and Sugar” sounds like a band that knows exactly who it is and isn’t afraid to lean into it. That’s something we appreciate every time established artists continue making music for the love of creating rather than simply trying to recreate yesterday’s success.
After a few listens, something interesting happens.
The song stops feeling like a new release and starts feeling like it’s always belonged in the catalog. That’s one of the hardest things for any songwriter to accomplish. The best songs don’t sound manufactured. They sound inevitable.
Maybe that’s why we’ve found ourselves playing it over and over.
It has become one of those songs that comes on during the workday and suddenly nobody reaches for the skip button. Whether we’re building playlists, writing articles for Backstage, reviewing new releases, or debating this month’s Top 100, “Blood and Sugar” keeps finding its way back into the rotation.
That’s a pretty good test around here.
At Masters Radio, we listen to hundreds of new songs every month. Most are good. Some are excellent. Only a handful become songs that we instinctively want to hear again before the first listen is even finished.
This is one of those songs.
Perhaps that’s the biggest compliment we can give it.
Not that it’s trying to become the biggest hit of the year.
Not that it’s chasing viral moments.
Simply that it’s the kind of song that reminds us why we built Masters Radio in the first place—to help people discover great new music from artists who still have plenty left to say.
So if you’re looking for one song to add to your playlist this month, make it “Blood and Sugar.”
We’ve been obsessed with it.
Don’t be surprised if you are too.
